Speaking what we think, want or opinion is just half of the communication involved. In order for it to be complete, you also need to have another skill and this is the effective listening skill. There are many people who do not have this skill unfortunately and as such, they are unable to carry out effective interaction with others. Keep in mind that communication will only be considered to be effective between two parties when the recipient receives as well as clearly understand that message that has been sent out by the sender.
How can you improve your listening skills?
1. When you are interacting with someone, you should sit up straight and then make sure that you are giving your 100% attention to the speaker.
2. You should have eye contact with the speaker, but not so much that it will make the two of you uncomfortable.
3. If there are any distractions that you can remove then make sure you remove or minimize the same, such as a television that is turned on.
4. To encourage the speaker to continue speaking, you need to respond to him or her and make them see that you are listening and are interested. You can say something like ‘oh’ or ‘uh huh’ and you can nod your head so as to make this person see that you are listening.
5. Even if someone if talking about something that you do not want to listen or if the conversation is boring, you need to pretend to be interested.
